Chapter 2 - Investigating Motion. Read the entire handout. Memorize the vocabulary words and definitions from lesson 1 and lesson 2.
Science experiment - DISSOLVING SUGAR
- Materials
- hot water in a clear glass
- cold water in a clear class
- sugar cubes
- spoon for stirring
- Take a glass and fill it with cold water. Make sure that you mark where you filled the glass to! Add one cube of sugar. Stir until you no longer see the sugar. Then add another cube. Stir again until you do not see the sugar. Keep on adding sugar one at a time and stirring until you start seeing sugar at the bottom of the glass. This means that the sugar is no longer dissolving. Make sure you count the number of sugar cubes that you used!
- Then take a glass and fill it with hot water. Be careful with the water! Make sure that the amount of water is the SAME as the glass of cold water. Now add a sugar cube and stir until you see it no more. Keep on adding sugar one at a time and stirring until you see sugar on the bottom of the glass. When the sugar is on the bottom of the glass, it means that the sugar is no longer dissolving in the water. Make sure that you count again the number of sugar cubes that you used!

DISCUSSION
Try to explain why the hot water dissolved more sugar cubes than the cold water. Make sure you talk about the molecules in the hot water that move faster than the molecules in the cold water. The molecules in the hot water are further apart than the molecules in the cold water.
