I hope that you are all off to a great vacation!

Here is a reminder of the work that you will need to complete during this time. Start early to make sure that you have done everything neatly and correctly!

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

Independant writing Tic Tac Toe - Use your story book to complete the activities on this sheet!

Writing Workshop -  3 stories

Week 5 Vocabulary words - Make sure that each card is numbered, has the word correctly written, the definition, a synonym, an antonym, and a sentence (with the word).

MATHEMATICS

Harcourt Text book pages 32 and 33

SCIENCE

Chapter 2 - Investigating Motion. Read the entire handout. Memorize the vocabulary words and definitions from lesson 1 and lesson 2.

Science experiment - DISSOLVING SUGAR

• Materials
• hot water in a clear glass
• cold water in a clear class
• sugar cubes
• spoon for stirring

• Take a glass and fill it with cold water. Make sure that you mark where you filled the glass to! Add one cube of sugar. Stir until you no longer see the sugar. Then add another cube. Stir again until you do not see the sugar. Keep on adding sugar one at a time and stirring until you start seeing sugar at the bottom of the glass. This means that the sugar is no longer dissolving. Make sure you count the number of sugar cubes that you used!

• Then take a glass and fill it with hot water. Be careful with the water! Make sure that the amount of water is the SAME as the glass of cold water. Now add a sugar cube and stir until you see it no more. Keep on adding sugar one at a time and stirring until you see sugar on the bottom of the glass. When the sugar is on the bottom of the glass, it means that the sugar is no longer dissolving in the water. Make sure that you count again the number of sugar cubes that you used!

DISCUSSION
Try to explain why the hot water dissolved more sugar cubes than the cold water. Make sure you talk about the molecules in the hot water that move faster than the molecules in the cold water. The molecules in the hot water are further apart than the molecules in the cold water.

CONCLUSION: (Please write this for your conclusion)

We are now partnering with Grade 4 class of The Jewish Day Primary School in Washington DC! We had a great relationship two years ago, and both classes ( Grade 4 of IQRA and Grade 4 of JPDS) worked on similar themes through out the year.

Eitan, Ari P, Ari B, Milo, Matthew, Samuel, Simon, Evan, Ben, Zoe, Lili, Nava, Yael, Miriam, Eleanor, Shoshana, Maile, Mira have sent letters to our class! Students have already responded to them last week. Our letters were sent by postal mail.

This year we will be working on common themes and posting the work on this blog. Keep on checking to see our activities!

IQRA nasheed choir - IQRA ARIA

Assalamu alaikum!

If you like singing and you want to be a part of the choir, auditions for IQRA ARIA will be Friday from 12 - 1pm and Saturday from 9am - 11am inshaAllah.

Rehearsals / practice will on Tuesdays 4:40 - 6:00 and Saturdays 11:30 - 1:30 for elementary school and 11:00 - 1:30 for middle school and high school!

Dye dispersion experiment - Science is cool!

It looks like we are sipping some Kool aid right? 

 We are currently learning about Energy in Science. Our experiment is to find out what temperature makes our dye disperse faster. Most students knew that hot water made the dye disperse faster but they had some difficulties explaining why. Here are some pictures.

Each set of cups contains ice water, warm water and hot water.

Dictionaries

Students will obligatorily need an English language dictionary for English Language Arts. Once a week, our class centres on dictionary work and vocabulary acquisition.

Folders

Students should have a folder for Mathematics, English, French, Social Studies and Science. Folders should be the simple kind where you can just insert the paper into the sleeves.

DIBELS and Title I testing this week!

I hope that you are all having a good week!

This week, we will be doing two American standardized tests : DIBELS and TITLE I.

What are DIBELS?

The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.

What is Title I (Mathematics and English Language Arts)?

These tests:

• measure students' profiency in academic subjects
• are aligned with state content standards
• provide coherent information about student attainment of such standards

At IQRA, we will periodically be testing students until the end of the year. Students' literacy, reading skills and math skills are expected to improve as the months pass inshaAllah.

Homework planners

I hope that you all are doing well. Alhumdulilah.

Students received a  homework planner, alhumdulilah! They were distributed on September 15. Students are required to note their assignments in this notebook and mark if they completed the assignment.We, the teachers, will also add any messages or comments if necessary.

The homework planner needs to be in their bags everyday! 

Students still need to learn their lessons daily even if they do not have any written assignments!

Students were asked to list their challenges for this year. Firstly, they needed to be honest about their true challenges, and subsequently, develop methods to help them overcome them!

• to complete all their assignments
